What are Tokens, and how do they work?
If you see "Tokens" around Deutschmeister and wonder what they actually mean, the answer is simple: Tokens are credits you use to start practice tests.
Think of Tokens as practice credits
Tokens give you access to practice on Deutschmeister. Instead of choosing a specific module when you get your Tokens, you can decide how to use them when you are ready to practice.
You can use them for Lesen, Schreiben, or Hören. The number of Tokens required depends on the module you choose.
How many Tokens does a test use?
Lesen and Schreiben each require 1 Token, while Hören requires 2 Tokens.
Let's look at an example
Imagine you have 5 Tokens in your account and want to practice B1 Lesen.
What if I choose Hören?
Hören requires 2 Tokens. So if you start with the same balance of 5 Tokens:
You do not need to calculate anything yourself. Deutschmeister shows you the required number of Tokens before you start.
You decide how to use your Tokens
Your Tokens are not tied to one specific module. You can use the same Token balance differently depending on what you want to practice.
With 4 Tokens, for example, you could choose:
- 4 Lesen practices
- 4 Schreiben practices
- 2 Hören practices
- or a combination such as 1 Lesen + 1 Schreiben + 1 Hören
When are my Tokens used?
Not while you are simply choosing what to practice.
Before starting a test, Deutschmeister shows you the Token cost and your current balance, so you know what will happen before you continue.
You will always see the Token cost before you start a test. If you change your mind before starting, no Tokens are used.
What if I do not have enough Tokens?
Let's say you have 1 Token left.
You can still start a Lesen or Schreiben practice, because each requires 1 Token.
But you will not be able to start Hören because it requires 2 Tokens. Your remaining Token will not be deducted if you do not start an eligible test.
Why does Deutschmeister use Tokens?
Because what you need to practice can change.
Maybe today you want to work on Lesen. Tomorrow, Schreiben might need more attention. Before your exam, you may decide that Hören is where you need more practice.
Tokens give you the flexibility to decide where to use your practice credits instead of locking them to one module.

Use them whenever you are ready to practice.
Starting one Lesen or Schreiben practice uses 1 Token.
Starting one Hören practice uses 2 Tokens.
You will know how many Tokens you are using before you start.
