Reading Module Breakdown (Lesen - 65 Min)
Part 1 involves blog posts or personal letters (matching/multiple choice), Part 2 tests article comprehension in press texts, Part 3 features 10 classified ads matched to 7 situational profiles plus a negative option ('0'), Part 4 tests 7 forum opinions on a controversial topic (Ja/Nein), and Part 5 covers official rules, guidelines, or club statutes.
Listening Module Breakdown (Hören - 40 Min)
Part 1 features 5 short announcements or voicemails played twice (richtig/falsch and multiple choice), Part 2 is an informational guided tour or presentation played once, Part 3 is an informal conversation between two people played once, and Part 4 is a radio talk show discussion with a moderator and two guests played twice.
Writing Module Breakdown (Schreiben - 60 Min)
Part 1 is an informal personal email of roughly 80 words addressing three prompt points, Part 2 is a written opinion of roughly 80 words responding to a forum post on a controversial topic, and Part 3 is a formal email of roughly 40 words requesting information, apologizing, or arranging an appointment.
Speaking Module Breakdown (Sprechen - 15 Min)
Conducted in pairs, Part 1 requires candidates to jointly plan an event or solve a practical problem (Gemeinsam etwas planen), Part 2 is an individual 5-step structured presentation on a chosen theme, and Part 3 involves answering questions from examiners and your partner about your presentation.
Module Evaluation and Test-Day Strategy
Each module is scored independently out of 100 points, with 60 points required to pass. In the written components, transfer answers to your answer sheet steadily, and allocate your 60 writing minutes proportionally: 20 minutes for Part 1, 25 minutes for Part 2, and 15 minutes for Part 3.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I pass three modules but fail one in Goethe B1?
You will receive official module certificates for the three passed modules. You only need to re-register for and retake the single failed module at any Goethe-Institut test center to complete your full B1 qualification.
How much preparation time do I get before the B1 Speaking exam?
You receive 15 minutes of individual preparation time before the speaking exam begins. You can make handwritten notes on the provided task sheet, but you are not permitted to read complete pre-written sentences aloud during the test.
Is extra time given to transfer answers in B1 Reading and Listening?
For the Reading module, answer transfer must be completed within the 65-minute total time limit. In the Listening module, a dedicated transfer time of approximately 5 minutes is built into the end of the audio track.
