Overview of the Goethe A1 Speaking Test (Sprechen)
The speaking module lasts approximately 15 minutes and is conducted in a group of up to four candidates with two examiners. It tests your ability to present personal information, ask and answer basic questions, and make simple everyday requests.
Part 1: Self-Introduction, Spelling, and Numbers
In Part 1, you introduce yourself using seven standard prompts on a cue card: Name, Alter, Land, Wohnort, Sprachen, Beruf, and Hobby. Afterward, the examiner will ask you to spell a word (like your family name or street) and state a number (such as your phone number or postal code).
Part 2: Asking and Answering Questions with Theme Cards
In Part 2, candidates take turns drawing prompt cards with a theme (e.g., 'Essen und Trinken', 'Einkaufen') and a keyword (e.g., 'Brot', 'Kasse'). You must formulate a grammatically correct question using the keyword, and your partner must provide an appropriate answer.
Part 3: Formulating Requests Using Picture Cards
In Part 3, you draw cards displaying everyday objects (e.g., a glass of water, a pen, a mobile phone). You must formulate a polite imperative or request to your partner (e.g., 'Geben Sie mir bitte das Buch!') and respond appropriately to their request (e.g., 'Ja, gerne.').
Repair Phrases for Unclear Moments
If you do not understand an examiner or a partner, use practical clarification phrases rather than staying silent. Phrases like 'Wie bitte?', 'Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?', or 'Noch einmal, bitte' show interactive competence and keep the conversation going.
Common A1 Speaking Mistakes to Avoid
Common errors include memorizing rigid self-introductions without being able to answer spontaneous follow-up questions, answering partner questions with only one-word replies ('Ja' / 'Nein'), or hesitating on the German alphabet when asked to spell.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my speaking partner speaks very quietly or makes errors?
You are evaluated exclusively on your own performance, not your partner's. If their question is unclear, politely say 'Wie bitte?' or answer as best you can based on the keyword on their card; the examiners will step in if needed.
Do I need to speak in full sentences during the A1 speaking exam?
Yes, you should aim to speak in short, complete sentences rather than isolated words. For example, instead of just saying 'Wasser', say 'Haben Sie ein Glas Wasser für mich?' or 'Trinken Sie gern Wasser?'.
How should I practice spelling names for Part 1?
Practice reciting the German alphabet daily, paying particular attention to vowels with umlauts (ä, ö, ü), 'ß' (Eszett), and letters often confused by English speakers such as 'E' [eː], 'I' [iː], 'J' [jɔt], 'V' [faʊ], and 'W' [veː].
